Striking images of the Añashuayco Valley have attracted visitors from all over the world. This valley runs for over 20 km and is filled with gigantic quarries of red and white sillar, the raw material that has been used to make buildings in Arequipa since time immemorial. Local artisans have even made a life-sized sillar replica of a Baroque door. Visitors will learn about the traditional methods artisans use to cut sillar blocks. On the right bank of the Chili River, visitors can view impressive petroglyphs that are believed to have been made by the Wari culture (between 400 and 1200 AD). These images depict humans, mythical beings, and a wide range of animals. The Wari influence can also be found at the site of Culebrillas. This area also features a bridge from the Colonial era known as the “Puente del Diablo” (“Devil’s Bridge”), as well as a textile-making complex that dates to the nineteenth century and has since become a ghost town. The route connects Uchumayo with La Joya, with a path perfect for trekking, horseback riding, or biking.
