Mismi, Source of the Amazon

Geographers have always been interested in identifying the most distant source of the great Amazon River. For a long time, that point was believed to be Lake Vilafro in Caylloma. However, in 1971, Loren McIntire, a researcher from National Geographic, traced the source to the snowcapped mountain of Mismi, which is part of the Cordillera de Chila (Cailloma). This information was then corroborated by outstanding Peruvian and international specialists. In 2011, the institution Prodena Arequipa filed a request with the Ministry of the Environment to create Mismi National Park – Source of the Amazon
