Convent and Museum of la Recoleta
The convent was designed by Father Pedro de Peñaloza in 1648. Three years later, the church and two cloisters were completed. The architectural complex has four sillar cloisters and has been a museum since 1978. It has a library with around 25,000 volumes dating from the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. It also has an ethnographic room, a religious art room, an Amazon museum with pieces collected by missionaries during their time in the Peruvian jungle, a toy room, a museum of pre-Columbian art, and a museum of religious art. The convent forms part of the city’s new cultural circuit, along with a new coin collection room, beautiful gardens, and an old cemetery.
