Traditional village of Cayma
The district of Cayma is one of twenty-nine in the province of Arequipa. Among its many attractions is its main square, which has preserved its original Mestizo style from the days of the Viceroyalty. Around the square are the Church of San Miguel Arcángel, the home of Cacique Alpaca, and the Comedor de Bolívar (Bolivar’s Dining Room), where the “Liberator” Simón Bolívar is said to have once spent the night. Inside the church, we find invaluable eighteenth-century paintings created by artists of the Cuzco School. One of the district’s biggest celebrations is held in honor of the “Virgen de la Candelaria” (literally, “Our Lady of Candlemas”) on February 2. This occasion combines the sacred veneration of the Virgin Mary with more profane elements typical of popular feasts. Cayma is also a mandatory stop for those looking to indulge in Arequipa’s cuisine, with several of the area’s most traditional picanterías located along its steep streets.
